“Maya’s art is a breathtaking act of resistance that is inspiring countless women of color across our region.”

-Edmonds-Woodway High School Black Student Union

About

Art is not just a creative outlet, but a profound means of communication, self expression, and activism. My mission is to create art that fosters a transformative space where BIPOC can envision lives beyond the confines of existing structures, while also creating art that explores the depths of peace. I draw inspiration from human connection, consciousness, and the vast universe, with a style that is heavily influenced by Afrofuturism. My work celebrates and embraces Narrative Portraiture by storytelling and uniting through art. Placing us in positions that reveal the inherent beauty and extraordinary power within us all.

Accepting my award at the Capitol.

Bio

Maya Milton is a multidisciplinary artist who uses narrative portraiture as a way to reclaim, resist, and heal. Her work is rooted in Black storytelling and deeply influenced by Afrofuturism. Through her art, Maya imagines futures where BIPOC not only survive, but thrive.

As a Black woman living with a chronic illness, her creative practice is deeply personal. It’s shaped by lived experience, ancestral memory, and a deep desire to be seen beyond the limitations that society often tries to impose. Her work doesn’t just tell stories, it uplifts them, documents truth, and creates space for connection and community.

Maya’s art has been exhibited throughout Seattle, from MoPop to the Seattle Rep, and her voice has been recognized by organizations like the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, where she was honored as a “Changemaker.” She’s also received the Jordan Schnitzer Black Lives Matter Artist Grant, was named a VSA Emerging Young Artist with Disabilities Awardee, and was a Neddy at Cornish Finalist.
